The situation of children in Europe has been and remains a huge concern. It has been demonstrated that investing in children during early years development has a potential to prevent the intergenerational transmission of poverty.
The adoption of the EC Recommendation Investing in Children shows EU political will to tackle the issue. One year and a half on from the adoption of the Recommendation it is time to reflect on how seriously Member States have taken it and its outcomes at national level.
The purpose of the event, organised by the EU Alliance for Investing in Children on the occasion of the Fourth Annual Convention of the European Platform Against Poverty and Social Exclusion, is to debate on the current state of play; the impact of EU instruments on Member States; opportunities and obstacles for implementation, and next steps.
After the welcome and introduction, children from Avilés (Spain) will share their inputs and the Spanish Alliance will present the child-friendly version of Commission’s Recommendation. Participants at the panel discussion will include: Raffaele Tangorra, Director General for Social Inclusion and Social Policies, Ministry of Labour and Social Policies of Italy; Andriana Sukova-Tosheva, ESF Director, European Commission; and Tom Dominique, Chair of the Social Protection Committee.
